I don't think a re-write or revising of Powers and
Perils necesarily has to fall to Richard's shoulders.
I re-wrote a Marvel Superheroes Roleplaying game on my
spare time and had a lot of fun doing it. I've got a
friend who built a Transformers Roleplaying game from
the ground up. We continually tweak the game here and
there using only MS Word as the platform for the game
text and take it with us in print and on the laptops.
The caveat is that we play these home-written games
when we are not playing D&D 3.5 (D&D comprises of 90%
of our gaming time).
It then begs the question: If I think Powers & Perils
has a superior combat and character build system, why
haven't I re-written THAT game system? The answer is
two-fold...
1) Re-writing Powers & Perils would require a
significant amount of work, particularly in the magic
section. In theory I like the way that magic is
resolved, but the spell selection, and results leave
something to be desired. This section would have to
be built from the ground up.
2) D&D 3.5 is not an unplayable system. It isn't
perfect, but off the shelf it isn't that bad.
Moreover, my gaming group, shrinking as the years go
by, have invested literally hundereds of dollars in
WOTC expansion books. To ask them to play a fantasy
game that will not utilize these books is very
difficult to do.
I'm not sure I want to invest the time to re-write a
game that my few players would not buy into.
