[PnP] pnp Digest, Vol 128, Issue 3: finding PCs

Divination seems a natural way to seek out someone needed to help with a particular problem. Either that, or a senior member of any organization, temple, or mage who might be familiar with those with potential talents. One could always ask the local tavern or pub owner, or innkeeper, where more localizes knowledge is needed.
If one has time, one could advertise for Adventurers & in interviews, ask re: Birth Talents (gifts/talents that applicant has seemed to have since a child). Response would depend on how the individual has been brought up by his culture in dealing with what could be embarrassing or dangerous talents.
The Gods might also help - if there's a problem that the gods (or a God) is concerned about, he/she might just "nudge" those with the needed talents to the place where they are needed, so they can be "found" at the right time. I'm using bits & pieces of all these to get PCs where I want them.. Also, there's messages passed by the Gods through prayer & meditation of druids, shamans & priests, where the most humble & devout might be given clues as to needed actions.

Hmmm...I'm trying to determine how a player might find or
detect Characters as opposed to simple 'average'
humanoids.
The only way I can think of is to use Divination, perhaps,
to get some idea of who or where...then maybe go where
divined and start searching. Maybe it would be obvious
if a Character was the county wrestling champion, or
similar. But how would you determine characters with
magic use potential?
Any other ideas?

Just potential? you probably wouldn't. However, as I recall,
you CAN detect types of mana, at least elemental mana
(although I'd have to dig around for a reference). If
someone knows a fire spell, for instance, they would have
fire mana, and a fire detection spell would find them. Of
course, it would also trigger if they had the innate ability
to cast one or more fire spells, or was allied to elemental
fire or etc, but still, that would all be character level
ability.
Mostly though, a mage that refuses to use magic isn't
detectable as a mage, anymore than a sword master that won't
pick up a sword is detectable as a sword master.

To sense magic only need Mana Sense and Reading.
But to figure out npc from pc. Not thought on
it. Obviously stats are higher
so I suppose one could detect for a certain level.
Like find a large
bull with big stats to compare and maybe a Champion or
King. Use as
baseline. So might detect for X level say 30 con+ and
figure that way.
Potential...well fo rmagic? Innates have a big source of
magic...midchlorians :)
For pcs?. Maybe tdetect for Supernatural Attributes or
Talents
though that might be too broad a scope
