Phoenix - spell variability

I think I allowed my players, when they learned spells, to make variants on
some where like units could be exchanged. It was tricky, since not every
spell could be tweaked. For example, a spell that had a range and an area
effect might be able to double the range, but suffer by having 1/3 the area
effect. Or going the other way, have 50% more area effect, but only 1/3 the
range (which may well put you inside the area!). This variant was not
changeable -- the parameters were locked when you learned the spell variant.
If P&P V2's magic parameters are simplified or made more modular, this sort
of "personalization" may become easier.

||
||
|| Another option to be discussed is whether and how a spell
|| caster may vary
|| one (or more) of the spells effects at a given EL.
||
|| The factors that can be varied are such things as range,
|| duration and MDV
|| limit.
||
|| Each EL adds 2 mana to the cost. One should not be able to match the
|| effects of a higher EL at a cheaper (or even the same) cost.
|| It should be
|| hazardous to increase the effect of a spell when one doesn't
|| have the EL
|| in it to cast the increased effect normally. One should be
|| able to cast
|| decreased effects as well.
||
|| Okay, the floor is open for proposals (preferably elegant)
|| on how to do
|| this.
