Summoning a Soul Daiva, is it optional for them or are they
guaranteed to arrive if the spell is successfully cast? After all a Soul
Daiva is supposedly immune to the nearly every spell, presumably
including the Summoning spell. Thus is a Summoning spell effectively
only saying "Here kitty, kitty. Come get your dinner." Or is a Summoning
spell going to grab them regardless of their wishes?
According to their description Soul Daivas are immune to nearly
everything except other Soul Daivas - physically immune and magically
only being affected by Banish Chaos spells and perhaps communication
spells. Supposedly weapons dedicated to their destruction WILL damage a
Soul Daiva. However the Dedication spell requires something (preferably
blood) from the thing that it is dedicated for or against. Soul Daivas
being energy ball type critters don't leave behind such mementos. The
one way to do so is to somehow constrain a Soul Daiva into the weapon as
mentioned in the creature description.
This IS problematical as they can pass thru any physical obstacle.
One obvious way to tie the Soul Daiva to a weapon is to Permanently
Summon the Soul Daiva to the weapon (restricting it to the weapon's
damaging locations) having cast Permanency on the Summoning spell. This
would only work if the Soul Daiva was not immune to the Summon spell.
Alternatively a sufficiently convoluted Banish Chaos spell (like using
magnets to constrain a fusion reaction) might be used to constrain a
Soul Daiva into a weapon and be made permanent. Note that should such a
weapon break or otherwise release the Soul Daiva one could expect it to
attempt to track down and destroy whoever put it into the weapon. If
used to attack another Soul Daiva would any enchantment bonuses on the
weapon apply? (I would say yes.) Most magical weapons have NO effect on
Soul Daivas. Would the Soul Daiva in the weapon be able to feed
(probably) or be fed upon by other Soul Daivas (again probably).
[Note that with an MDV of 24 a Dispel Chaos has to be at least EL6 ((at
EL+2)x3) to affect Soul Daivas. This raises the question of WHAT happens
when a dispel does not fail but is simply too low an EL for the listed
MDV limit? Was casting that EL of Dispel a waste of time? Does it work
after all? Might it work with a penalty?]
Similar techniques could be used to constrain a Spectre into a weapon
using shamanic or priestly magic as Spiritual Edimmu (Spectres) are
immune to Sidh and Wizard spells. The same question applies regarding
Summoning. If a sidh magician or human wizard casts summoning to get a
Spiritual Edimmu would the spell work? Might it work if it were hungry?
And if they can't affect it with their magics why can shamans and
priests? (Perhaps they work more on the spiritual plane?)
Since Spectres do spiritual damage would they be able to damage a Soul
Daiva? And vice versa? Would a weapon containing a Spectre be able to
hurt or kill a Soul Daiva? And vice versa? Is spiritual neither physical
nor magical? Why wouldn't a shamanic Spirit Cage work against Soul
Daivas? Though a magical spell it IS designed to contain spirits.
Granted one would want to make it a VERY STRONG spirit cage.
