I was John's friend and can give you a little more info about what
happened. He collapsed that night (June 23rd) about 11 PM or so.
Paramedics were called and they rushed him off to the hospital but they
could not revive him. It turns out he had an enlarged heart with an
irregular heartbeat. An autopsy found over 30% blockage in one of the
arteries to his heart. I found out later that John was basically diabetic
and probably had been for years but was pretty much in denial about it. I
wish he had told me more about his health, maybe I could have helped.
I saw someone mention they thought he had a wife and kids. Rhonda and he
never married for certain financial reasons but for all intents and
purposes they were husband and wife. Her kids were mostly grown when
Rhonda met John so they never thought of him as their father though they
were quite fond of him and got along together well. Rhonda's grandchildren
however usually referred to him as 'Grandpa John' so John's death was
quite a blow to them.
John and I were close friends and it was hard to see him go so young. We
had played PnP in the past and always had a lot of fun. We got together
every Saturday more or less where we were currently playing in a
Pathfinder campaign where John was continuing his tradition of playing
'unique' characters. We also played quite a few board games like Runebound
and Arkham Horror to name a couple.
I like to think wherever John is now he's in a better place, playing in
one heck of a game with the likes of Houdini, Einstein, Da Vinci, Elvis,
Plato, Tesla, and The Duke :)

It seems we have lost yet another member to our quiet group.
John Hooten aka Raban to most of us was a kind guy. But there seems
to be evidence that he died earlier this summer. I tried to check
with 2 of the others listed for his city. One does not exist and the
other has not replied. I tried to search for info on his sister here
in town but no direct info so can't confirm it with her. So while
this is unconfirmed it seems to be highly likely. Some evidence seems
to indicate and the clues pile up.
We know he had medical issues and seems to have lost that battle. We
lost contact was 8 months ago. I tried to email him before a few
times and did get a reply actually in May. So my last contact was
in May.
I knew John only in email as much as a relationship can go. But I
thought he was a good guy and a very active player in my PBEM game.
He was in the last couple of adventures about 3 years.
In our game he was known as Raban a half-breed Giant Bard that was
kind and gentle but as powerful as 8 kodiak bears. He was always
eager to play and learn more.
We shall miss him.
This is the obit that we seemed to find about him:
